Dear Parishioners of Assumption, St. Peter, St. Richard, and Blessed Trinity Families
Our hearts go out to the people of Annunciation, who are suffering from such an unimaginable act of violence. It is one thing to know that there is such evil in the world; it is another for it to make itself felt so painfully at our most sacred event. Jesus sought out especially those who were suffering, and so we ask him to make his presence felt now especially in the hearts of those who are mourning.
Whenever my thoughts turn to this tragedy, I have personally found it easier to focus on the acts of heroism and self-sacrifice of the Annunciation community: students shielding each other from harm, teachers and staff protecting their students, neighbors comforting the wounded as help arrived. Good was present to respond to evil.
The world is responding as the world does, which has its place. If there are laws and policies that are enacted that help protect the innocent, that is well and good. We pray that such laws are just and promote the common good.
Our response as disciples of Christ also has its place. Our fight is against sin, and that starts in our own hearts. We ask Jesus to protect our hearts from the sins of hatred, cynicism, and despair. In the face of sin, we do not respond with more sin, but with love.
I encourage us all to be especially faithful to our prayers in this time of sorrow. Draw near to Jesus and ask him to send his grace into our hearts. May Mary, Mother of the Church, intercede on our behalf and comfort us, her children.

Queridos feligreses de Assumption, St. Peter, St. Richard y familias de Blessed Trinity:
Nuestros corazones están con el pueblo de Annunciation, que está sufriendo por un acto de violencia tan inimaginable. Una cosa es saber que existe el mal en el mundo; otra muy distinta es sentirlo de manera tan dolorosa en nuestro evento más sagrado. Jesús buscaba de manera especial a quienes sufrían y por eso le pedimos que haga sentir su presencia ahora, particularmente en los corazones de quienes están de luto.
Cada vez que pienso en esta tragedia, encuentro personalmente más fácil enfocarme en los actos de heroísmo y sacrificio de la comunidad de la Annunciation: estudiantes protegiéndose mutuamente, maestros y personal cuidando a sus alumnos, vecinos consolando a los heridos mientras llegaba la ayuda. El bien estuvo presente para responder al mal.
El mundo responde como el mundo responde, y eso tiene su lugar. Si se promulgan leyes y políticas que ayuden a proteger a los inocentes, eso es algo bueno. Rezamos para que esas leyes sean justas y promuevan el bien común.
Nuestra respuesta como discípulos de Cristo también tiene su lugar. Nuestra lucha es contra el pecado y eso comienza en nuestros propios corazones. Pedimos a Jesús que proteja nuestros corazones de los pecados del odio, el cinismo y la desesperanza. Ante el pecado, no respondemos con más pecado, sino con amor.
Los animo a todos a ser especialmente fieles a la oración en este tiempo de dolor. Acérquense a Jesús y pídanle que envíe su gracia a nuestros corazones. Que María, Madre de la Iglesia, interceda por nosotros y nos consuele a nosotros, sus hijos.
